Nature’s Counterattacks
Nature’s Counterattacks
Human beings represent just one of the countless life forms that make up nature. Nevertheless, humans have been striving to conquer nature with the use of science and technology. Climate change is progressing as the natural order has been destroyed, melting the glaciers of Antarctica and thinning the ozone layer that surrounds the Earth. Various pollutants caused by industrialization are now hurting our planet. Humans have brought this upon themselves, and nature, which had allowed itself to be conquered unilaterally until recently, has begun its counterattack.
In the quest for convenience, plastic has endured as one of the most consumed materials for modern civilizations. However, most plastics do not decompose on their own, making them a major source of contamination for soil and the oceans. With this in mind, I have been working for almost 30 years on efforts to recycle discarded plastic goods. In order to be reused, plastic waste must be crushed and extruded into plastic pellets.
I tried to paradoxically express environmental problems while using these recycled plastic pellets. For this, I created three-dimensional images by re-photographing environment-related images collected from the Internet, enlarging them and printing them on canvas cloth and then attaching the recycled plastic pellets to them. Because of the numerous plastic particles attached, the original image becomes refracted and distorted, eventually disappearing as it is reproduced in a new image. Yet the image’s inherent essence is highlighted through the prisms of the particles.
Despite our struggles against many bacteria, such as SARS, Ebola, and MERS, we have not escaped our human-centered way of thinking. Now, as COVID-19 impacts the world, people are suddenly overwhelmed with fear of global environmental change. Amid the urgent global efforts to rectify the present situation, I have also collected photos of world leaders who are at the forefront of decision making on these issues and have attached the recycled plastic pellets to them, as well. My hope is that radical change might take hold in their way of thinking about climate change and environmental pollution.
All living things in nature go through cycles of creation and annihilation. Through this cycle, nature is purified and maintained, which is the providence of nature. It is only right for humans to learn to stop conquering nature and simply exist within nature’s providence.
